How to Become a Pacific Oceanic Controller

  1. New controllers are always welcomed.  You do not have to become a visiting controller of any ARTCC, the Oceanic FIR is independent of any ARTCC. All Oceanic controllers are "visiting controllers".

  2. Understand that Oceanic controlling is non-radar controlling.  You can not issue radar vectors.  While we use a sector file and radar client such as ASRC or VRC. it is in theory only for text communications.  You should be able to operate the position by not even looking at the screen !

  3. Take a good read of the training materials on the web site. Be sure to read the Policy page.

  4. Once you feel you understand the basics, you may request an Oceanic Mentor or Instructor by completing this form.

  5. After completing your OTS session, if, in the judgment of the Oceanic Mentor or Instructor, you have displayed an understanding of the FIR policies, SOPs, LOAs, and non-radar controlling techniques, you will be added to the roster and may open the position unsupervised.
